SEPTIC INSPECTION FOR SEPTIC SYSTEMS
Should you get a septic inspection? Well... A traditional septic system should last decades, but according to
the Virginia Water Resources Research Center
over half of the septic systems in the United States fail in the first 15-20 years.
Why?
-- Systems become clogged because residents put
stuff
in their septic system that it can't "digest".
--Systems become clogged because the solids don't get pumped out every 3-5 years.
--Septic Fields malfunction when pipes are crushed from residents driving cars/trucks on the septic field.
Some indicators of system failure are:
1. Sluggish drainage from plumbing fixtures
2. Sewage backup into the house
3. Seepage at ground surfaces
You should, therefore, get a a septic inspection before you close on your house to check it's operability. Most of the counties in our area now require a septic tank to be pumped every five years. We STRONGLY recommend you get your septic tank pumped at the time of the inspection. There are several companies that do the inspection and pump the tank. Just do a local internet search for "Septic Tank Cleaning".
There is a site from New York state,
InspectAPedia ©
, that has a lot of information on Septic Systems. If you want to do some more research or have an alternative system and want to know more about it, this is a good place to start.
